Program Description:

Computer Security Specialist is a course of instruction designed to prepare individuals for entry-level jobs as a Computer Security Specialist and will also prepare them to sit for CompTIA’s Secutiry+ Certification exam.  Upon completion of this program students will be able to plan, coordinate, and implement security measures for information systems to regulate access to computer data files and prevent unauthorized modification, destruction, or disclosure of information. The curriculum additionally provides students an opportunity to learn job-seeking and interpersonal skills as part of the program.

 

Upon graduation students will receive a certificate of completion.

 

Duties graduates from this program should expect to perform include, but are not limited to, encrypt data transmissions and erect firewalls to conceal confidential information, develop plans to safeguard computer files against accidental or unauthorized modification, destruction, or disclosure, review violations of computer security procedures, monitor use of data files and regulate access to them, monitor current reports of computer viruses to determine when to update virus protection systems, modify computer security files to incorporate new software, correct errors, or change individual access status, perform risk assessments and execute tests of data processing system, confer with users to discuss issues such as computer data access needs, security violations, and programming changes, train users and promote security awareness to ensure system security and to improve server and network efficiency, coordinate implementation of computer system plan with establishment personnel and outside vendors.

 

Graduates from this program usually work in small to big size organizations (public or private) in retail, manufacturing or service industries.  Examples of work settings where they might expect to find jobs are: schools, computer stores, hospitals, call centers, banks, corporate settings, government agencies, accounting firms.

Program Length:

 

The Computer Security Specialist program takes approximately two months to complete.

 

Admission Requirements:

Individuals applying for this course are required to:

  • interview with an admissions counselor;
  • be at least 17 years of age (applicants under the age of 18 require written permission from a parent or legal guardian in order to enroll, and a parent or legal guardian must sign the enrollment agreement); and
  • present proof of secondary education (high school diploma or GED certificate) or
  • in the event the applicant is unable to provide proof of secondary education, achieve a passing score on the Wonderlic Basic Skills Test (Verbal 200 and Quantitative 210) for English-speaking applicants (or students seeking enrollment in an all-English vocational program), or a passing score on the Wonderlic Spanish Scholastic Level Exam (13 correct answers, equivalent to High School functioning level) for Spanish speaking applicants seeking enrollment in a vocational program that includes ESL.

Multiple opportunities are allowed for retaking the same entrance test. Students must wait a minimum of five calendar days prior to retaking the test. Students will be allowed to take a second entrance test on the same day if agreeing to take a substantially different test.
