Program Description:

Nursing Assistant training is an intense, comprehensive and high quality program. The results-oriented class sessions will cover key Nursing Skills & Abilities to assist the trainee in understanding the professional and caring performance requirements of a Nursing Assistant. The skills and comprehension training will prepare the student for the Texas State Competency Evaluation Examination, which will be administered by a state certified agency. After the completion of the Nursing Assistant program, students may work in the medical field jobs in different work settings such Nursing Aides, Nursing Assistant, Home Healthcare Aid to name a few.


 

Main Skills of the Instructional Program

The goals of the instructional program contained in this guide are:

  • To provide basic care to residents of long term care facilities.
  • To communicate and interact effectively with residents and their families based on sensitivity to the psychosocial needs of residents.
  • To assist residents in attaining and maintain maximum functional independence.
  • To protect, support and promote the rights of residents.
  • To provide safety and preventive measures in the care of residents.
  • To demonstrate skill in observing and reporting.
  • To function effectively as a member of the health care team.

 

NOTE: Use of Standard Precautions, correct body mechanics, provision of privacy, maintaining confidentiality and proper use of side rails are expected to be integrated into all content and skills used in this manual. Therefore, they are not specifically addressed in each unit.

 

Upon graduation students will receive a certificate of completion.

Program Length:

The Nursing Assistant program takes approximately one month to complete.


 

Admission Requirements:

Individuals applying for this course are required to:

  • interview with an admissions counselor;
  • be at least 17 years of age (applicants under the age of 18 require written permission from a parent or legal guardian in order to enroll, and a parent or legal guardian must sign the enrollment agreement); and
  • present proof of secondary education (high school diploma or GED certificate) or
  • in the event the applicant is unable to provide proof of secondary education, achieve a passing score on the Wonderlic Basic Skills Test (Verbal 200 and Quantitative 210) for English-speaking applicants (or students seeking enrollment in an all-English vocational program), or a passing score on the Wonderlic Spanish Scholastic Level Exam (13 correct answers, equivalent to High School functioning level) for Spanish speaking applicants seeking enrollment in a vocational program that includes ESL.

Multiple opportunities are allowed for retaking the same entrance test. Students must wait a minimum of five calendar days prior to retaking the test. Students will be allowed to take a second entrance test on the same day if agreeing to take a substantially different test.
